Unix Systems Administrator

My client is looking for an intermediate Unix Systems Administrator for a
permanent role in Toronto. The position is to provide expertise in systems
administration and design to the operations group, and to provide
second-level systems administration support to the technical support group.

Key responsibilities
In consultation with the IT operations team leader, plan and implement
medium- and long-term operations strategies. Investigate, evaluate and
recommend new technologies. Provide specialized system expertise and
in-depth operating system and server knowledge, storage array and SAN
design. Design and build-out of all server, application, database
infrastructure throughout the enterprise at the hardware, OS and application
layers. Provides disaster recovery planning and execution. Guide junior
systems administrators in the performance of their duties, intervening when
necessary.
Aid in the evaluation of candidates for system administration positions. Act
as second level support for customer problems (on call after hours). Create
software and processes to meet company needs by designing, developing,
testing and implementing of utilities or source modifications. Represent the
department or company in internal and external projects, providing technical
guidance and expertise. Work with the 3rd party hosting provider as it
relates to system and application layer changes. Perform system
administration tasks in a third-party hosted environment (e.g install
software, tune operating system, configure storage arrays and SAN switches,
audit security, trouble shoot system problems to effective resolution).
Guide actions of managed hosting provider. Maintain all technical facilities
and related equipment

Technical knowledge & skills required
3-5 years UNIX System Administration experience
2-3 years experience with AIX
2-3 years experience with Linux
1-2 years experience with managing DNS, including some experience with BIND
Knowledge of LPAR and HACMP an asset
Experience with managing storage subsystems is required
Experience with managing SAN an asset
Experience with data centre design and build-out an asset
Experience with networking infrastructure, including routing technology,
packet shapers, QoS devices, and layer 4-7 switches
Expertise with data backup and recovery
Experience with mailservers - Sendmail or similar; Exim experience a plus
Familiarity with network and systems monitoring tools
Proven skills with one of the programming languages (Java, Perl, C), UNIX
shell scripting, SQL
